Zinc is the primary component of the hot-dip galvanized coating. The silvery, blue-gray vital metal is abundant, essential, common, and—more importantly—infinitely recyclable. Globe Metal buys zinc in draws, powder, vermiculite, and ingot forms, in addition to handling zinc solids in processed or mixed loads from a variety of industries. With the quality of lead often as good as that obtained from mining practices, Globe Metal plays its part in ensuring that the lead that is in circulation is recycled and reused. Cadmium is a minor metallic element, one of the naturally occurring components in the earth’s crust and waters, and present everywhere in our environment. Generally characterized as a soft, ductile, silver-white or bluish-white metal, Cadmium is found principally in association with zinc sulfide-based ores. It is also found in sedimentary rocks at higher levels than in igneous or metamorphic rocks. Today, there are 9 major NiCd battery recycling plants located in the United States, Europe and Japan capable of recycling approximately 20,000 mt of industrial and consumer NiCd batteries and their manufacturing scraps. Tin is most often used as part of solders such as Tin/Lead or as a conductive film in ITO (indium tin oxide) which is used extensively in electronics. Globe metal purchases tin in both high purity and as a residual element in tin solids, tin sludge, and tin powder.
Indium is a soft, silvery metal that is stable in air and water, and makes up an important part of touch screens, flat screen TVs, and solar panels. This is because it conducts electricity, bonds strongly to glass and is transparent. Indium nitride, phosphide, and antimonide are semiconductors used in transistors and microchips, while Indium metal sticks to glass and can be used to give a mirror finish to windows of tall buildings and as a protective film on welders’ goggles. It has also been used to coat ball bearings in Formula 1 racing cars because of its low friction. An indium alloy has been used for fire-sprinkler systems in shops and warehouses because of its low melting point. Antimony is a lustrous gray metalloid, found mainly as the sulfide mineral stibnite. Antimony compounds have been known since ancient times and were powdered for use as medicine and cosmetics. Globe Metal is one of few North American metal recycling companies that handles antimony, as the majority of its mining and recycling takes place in China. Common in the production of lead batteries and other types of solder, Globe Metal is experienced purchasing antimony sludges, residues, solids and CP material.
Whether present as a major element or in ingot form, Globe Metal works with multiple forms of bismuth, or in forms of ostalloy. Bismuth is often used in soldering products found in electronic components and aerospace applications and commonly found in silver/bismuth or tin/bismuth chemistries of various percentages. It has the interesting property of having a melting point at the temperature of coffee and is used in pharmaceuticals such as Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), paints and makeup.
Gallium is a chemical element with similarities to the other metals such as aluminum, indium, and thallium. Elemental gallium is a soft, silvery blue metal at standard temperature and pressure, a brittle solid at low temperatures, and a liquid at temperatures greater than 29.76° C. Gallium is a soft, silvery metal used primarily in electronic circuits, semiconductors and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). It is also useful in high-temperature thermometers, barometers, pharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine tests.
Tellurium is a chemical element that is a brittle, mildly toxic, rare, silver-white metalloid. Chemically related to selenium and sulfur, it is occasionally found in native form as elemental crystals. It is a semi-metal usually obtained as a grey powder. Tellurium is used in alloys, mostly with copper and stainless steel, to improve their machinability. When added to lead it makes it more resistant to acids and improves its strength and hardness. Some of its uses: to vulcanise rubber, tint glass and ceramics, in solar cells, in rewritable CDs and DVDs and as a catalyst in oil refining. It can be doped with silver, gold, copper or tin in semiconductor applications.
Rare Earth Metals
A rare earth metal is any of a group of chemically similar metallic elements comprising the lanthanide series and (usually) scandium and yttrium. They are not especially rare, but they tend to occur together in nature and are difficult to separate from one another.
